Kerkennah shipwreck: Remains of four shipwrecked returned to families
The first remains of the shipwrecked illegal immigrants who died as their boat sank off Kerkennah’s western coasts were handed over on Sunday to their families, Health Director General in Sfax Alia Ayadi said.
Autopsy procedures have been made by the medical examiner at the Habib Bourguiba University Hospital in Sfax, he told to TAP.
The identities of the four shipwrecked have been identified; two of them have been returned to their families while the remaining two others will be handed over later, he said.
At least 46 illegal migrants have drowned on June 2 when their boat, transporting some 200 people, sank off Kerkennah’s Island in Sfax while heading over the Italian island of Lampedusa.
68 people have been rescued, including 8 foreigners.
The death toll is expected to increase.
